For those who aren’t sleep-walking through this election cycle, it’s obvious that what’s playing out in the Republican Party is what has played out since Ronald Reagan left the stage. In a nut-shell, the establishment GOP raises more money from stupid donors and then crushes the principle-led wing of the party.
Again, I know I’m being tough by using the word “dumb.” I’m sorry. You pick a word. Every two years the people with the big wallets generously fund the same kind of candidates and consultants that they always have – and then they expect a different result. I know it’s now a cliché, but tell me if this doesn’t say it perfectly:
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
I just call them dumb; others would call them insane.
So what are you endorsing when you endorse Mitt Romney? Richard Viguerie summed it up nicely a couple of days ago in his post, “Establishment GOP’s Desperate Fight to Hold Power.” Here are a couple of my favorite parts:
The power that the insiders of the national Republican Party seek to protect is the power to receive a share of the spoils from the looting of beyond-the-Beltway America.The dirty secret of Washington’s inside culture is that the lobbyists, influence peddlers, access sellers and professional political operatives who make-up the inside elite of the national Republican Party will get paid no matter who is President.

The last thing the Republican establishment wants is a newly elected conservative President arriving in Washington at the head of a vast citizen movement committed to change and to ending earmarks, midnight tax breaks, crony capitalism and other abuses.
A short-cut to understanding why the GOP hasn’t stood for limited government is gained by re-reading those paragraphs. There’s a lot of money at stake, and when your goal is to enjoy a great lifestyle thanks to the flow of tax dollars, why would you ever want to limit government spending?
Oh, and in case you didn’t know it, there’s an Illinois version of this establishment. When was the last time you heard the leaders of the Illinois GOP calling for truly limited government?
If you doubt all of the above, I pray that sooner or later some sort of alarm clock wakes you up.
