One of the many telling conversations I had with Republican Party leaders over the years included an exchange with newly elected U.S. House Speaker Denny Hastert in early 1999. I asked him how soon we could expect to see tax simplification legislation in the U.S. House and he replied that we wouldn’t see it since the president (at that time, Bill Clinton) wouldn’t sign it. By the way, the fact that Speaker Hastert’s tenure overlapped President George W. Bush’s by six years is all you need to know. (We’re still waiting 13 unlucky years later.)
