Examining the GOP “Pledge to America”

The version of the Congressional Republican’s “Pledge to America” that I downloaded runs 46 pages with pictures and title pages. While it gives only a few words here and there to the social issues, ignores the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I still have to give it an “A.”

Am I grading on a curve? Maybe. This document is about as good as you’d expect from the bunch that produced it. As I keep saying, never forget that our so-called “leaders” in the Republican Party are one-hundred percent culpable for the mess America is in. They held power and squandered it by abandoning their principles. The rise of Nancy Pelosi was made possible by Dennis Hastert. The rise of Barack Obama was made possible by George W. Bush.

The fact that Republicans in Congress are now seeing the light is due mostly to Tea Party and 9/12 Patriot groups applying real grassroots pressure. It took the Obama leftwing earthquake to awaken the populace, who in turn has set off alarm bells for GOP leaders.

Here is the fancy long version of what’s on the title page:

A Pledge to America

A new governing agenda built on

THE PRIORITIES OF OUR NATION,

THE PRINCIPLES WE STAND FOR

&

AMERICA’S FOUNDING VALUES

Perhaps many people have seen the introductory comments that were widely disseminated (see the home page text here). This is how it begins:

America is more than a country.

America is an idea – an idea that free people can govern themselves, that government’s powers are derived from the consent of the governed, that each of us is endowed by their Creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. America is the belief that any man or woman can – given economic, political, and religious liberty – advance themselves, their families, and the common good.

Those who are not confused about the culture will see what I see. First, unlike Obama, the Republicans didn’t leave out “by their Creator” – and they even capitalized Creator as our Founding Fathers did. No doubt that offended many weak minds. And in that last sentence – “religious liberty” – – – – uh oh, there goes support for the entire “homosexual rights” agenda. As many of us have noted, our First Amendment protected freedom of religion trumps any leftist queer agenda – the two are incompatible.

A few other good lines and phrases from the intro (emphasis added):

Whenever the agenda of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to institute a new governing agenda and set a different course.

That echoes the Declaration of Independence, as does this next one:

In a self-governing society, the only bulwark against the power of the state is the consent of the governed, and regarding the policies of the current government, the governed do not consent.

An unchecked executive, a compliant legislature, and an overreaching judiciary have combined to thwart the will of the people and overturn their votes and their values, striking down longstanding laws and institutions and scorning the deepest beliefs of the American people.

In that last sentence – clearly they’re referring to institutions like marriage. If you think I’m exercising wishful thinking here – read on:

We pledge to honor families, traditional marriage, life, and the private and faith-based organizations that form the core of our American values.
