A few years ago the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts included this language in a news release referring to “the totalitarian instincts of organized homosexualism in America”:
What began as a so-called ‘gay rights’ movement, has become a neo-fascist enterprise dedicated to suppressing, harassing, censoring, silencing and punishing anyone supportive of biblical morality.
You might expect that from a Catholic organization. What isn’t expected is what Tammy Bruce, a woman who bills herself as “a gay conservative,” writes what she did in her book, The Death of Right and Wrong. In the opening pages of chapter one Bruce issues her warning:
Welcome to a culture where right and wrong have taken such a beating they’re no longer recognizable. If you think this debasement of our culture can never really affect you, think again. Today’s moral relativism and selfish agendas are moving through the body of society like a cancer, putting all of us at risk.
Tammy Bruce has some harsh words for the leadership of the “gay rights” movement and for those who seek to “indoctrinate decent, thoughtful people into accepting that the standards by which they were raised are wrong.”
Ms. Bruce writes that her own childhood trauma made her “a perfect candidate for leadership in the Left Elite.” Bruce explains that she disqualified herself by seeking psychological help. Getting to recovery is critical, she writes, so you can “…face your issues, deal with them, get the help you need, and rejoin life.”
When you do that, she says, you act “as a survivor and as your ordinary self” focused on individual change rather than social change. Avoiding recovery leads to a sinister development: “The subconscious transference of the injured person’s trauma onto society.” Wow. (The italics are hers, see page 29.)
A person’s state of mind impels his behavior, and in the view of Ms. Bruce, this lack of recovery from trauma is the motivating factor behind those who seek to undermine traditional moral standards. That is tough talk!
One of the most important tools of the “Left Elite” (as Bruce calls them) is the constant use of “special-interest group rhetoric.”
The Left has had to restrict individual freedom of thought and deed in order to destroy the concept of judgment and undermine notions of right and wrong that have been held nearly universally for millennia.
We all know how it is working. Big Media and Big Business seem to be easily misled. Opinion leaders like those on newspaper editorial boards and in corporate boardrooms appear as clueless as ever. If they had read Ms. Bruce’s book they’d know this:
The effort, using the mass media primarily, was and is to brainwash the public into believing that certain sexual practices are merely ‘alternative lifestyles.’
In the book Bruce writes that too many Americans are controlled “by what the media, and left-wing special-interest groups” tell them. They are:
…struggling in a swamp of groupthink, fearful of offending and refusing to face the devastation wrought by the sexually compulsive.
It’s time for more people to leave that swamp. Honesty about a disdain for homosexual behavior should be seen as an expression of concern and not as an offense.
On the topic of the radical political left’s aggressive efforts to indoctrinate kids, Bruce doesn’t hold back:
I believe this grab for children by sexually confused adults represents the most serious problem facing our culture today.
Later in the book she writes that “every good marketer knows, that effort must begin with children:”
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) describes itself as ‘the leading national organization fighting to end anti-gay bias in K-12 schools.’ This organization, which cloaks itself in a mantra about ‘tolerance’ and ‘understanding,’ is implementing programs in public schools that are aimed at nothing less than sexualizing your children.
There are countless “Gay-Straight Alliance” clubs on high school campuses across the country. The organization ‘GLSEN’ has even entered the debate over school choice, since vouchers undermine “efforts to ensure the safety of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.” In response to that quote from the GLSEN website, Bruce writes:
Please. The only thing it undermines is GLSEN’s ability to infiltrate schools with their propaganda… That’s another fantastic reason to support school vouchers—to get these parasites out of schools and away from children.
Under a subheading “A Time for Action,” Ms. Bruce includes this:
Remove your child from any school that allows a sexual message to be presented. It will most likely be presented under the guise of tolerance or preventing the spread of disease. Don’t be fooled.
Many years ago Dr. James Dobson made a similar observation.
GLSEN has, Bruce says, “appointed themselves as your children’s moral tutor.” She also writes:
Freedom demands a constant reassertion of values. The absence of righteous anger can be devastating to our culture.
Another of Bruce’s action points is:
Realize that wanting to be your own child’s moral tutor does not make you a ‘homophobe’ and that you shouldn’t be ‘silenced.’
