Balanced reporting is lacking about crimes against children

By John Biver

A friend sent me a note with a couple of links: “While perverse homosexual/pedophile Catholic priests are the media’s favorite target these days, and as a Catholic I find the cover-up of these crimes against children profoundly despicable, the Church is only one of many institutions plagued with these scandals in our darkened world.”

The National Day of Prayer and the doctrine of “tolerable acknowledgment” (Part 3)

By John Biver

Most governmental acknowledgements of religion are in the form of symbols, like the representation of Moses in the Supreme Court Chamber, or the motto, “In God We Trust,” authorized to be printed on all the currency of the United States. To suggest that this symbol means that the U.S. Treasury Department promotes trust in God is to suggest something that is far-fetched.

“A national coalition of pro-family organizations is once again asking parents to call their children out of school on the Day of Silence if their school will be permitting students and/or teachers to refuse to speak during class. According to Townhall.com columnist Matt Barber, the far-left wing “Southern Law Poverty Center” (SPLC) used to do good work. But alas, he writes, “power corrupts.” Barber recently wrote about the SPLC’s classifying one Illinois website as a “hate site” in his piece, “Southern Poverty Law Center Officially Declared “Left-Wing Hate Group.”

The Audacity of the State

By John Biver

“When I speak of the audacity of the state, the kind of state I have in mind is what we may call the savior state. The main characteristic of the savior state is that it presents itself as the people’s guardian, as the guarantor of the citizen’s well-being. The savior state is the paternal state, which not only sees to the security of its territory and the enforcement of its laws but also promises to feed, clothe, house, educate, monitor, medicate, and in general to care for its people. Some prefer to call it the nanny state, but that label fails to reckon with its inherently religious character.”

Tolerance misunderstood

By John Biver

The advancement of the homosexual political agenda should not be tolerated.

Having compassion for people who suffer from a sexual disorientation is perfectly understandable. Extensive research into what causes homosexuality has shown that often those causes take place when a person is very young. I’d recommend the work of Charles Socarides, his book “A Freedom Too Far,” the work of Arthur Goldberg, and his book “Light in the Closet: Torah, Homosexuality and the Power to Change,” and the work of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality.
