A leading cultural critic presents a pioneering new theory regarding two related trends: the decline of religion and the collapse of the family in the Western world.
In The Gay Science (1882), the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche famously declared: “God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.” The rapid decline of Christian belief and practice in the West continues to accelerate and is well documented.
But what caused this secularization? Mary Eberstadt, senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, DC, and author of How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization, says many wrongly believe as Americans have become more prosperous that God is no longer needed.
“It’s a story line that a lot of people accept unthinkingly, but it doesn’t hold up for several reasons,” the author tells OneNewsNow. “It turns out that money does not drive out God; and it turns out that prosperity and education do not by themselves drive out God,” the religious scholar shares. “There’s something else going on in Western secularization – and that’s what I’m trying to get at in the book.”
