Gender Identity Disorder is still a mental illness, Mr. President

Those on the Republican side who still want to avoid discussing the social issues might want to visit the White House website, which boldly announces that “change has come.”

What kind of change, you ask? Evidently our new president is going to act as if Gender Identity Disorder is not a mental illness. The new president wasted no time – the ridiculous is now a part of the White House website.

The following is from the whitehouse.gov website under “the Agenda” and “Civil Rights” and scroll down to the heading “Support for the LGBT Community: (In case you didn’t know, here’s what LGBT stands for: Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender.) I’ve bolded the following text “and gender identity.”

Support for the LGBT Community

Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.”

On that second bullet point above, if you’ve read what we’ve posted about why government recognizes traditional marriage, you’ll understand better how confused Obama’s thinking is.

On that first bullet point above, here is what Laurie Higgins writes today on the Illinois Family Institute’s website:

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is a psychological disorder in which people “feel discontent” with their biological sex. They wish they had been born the opposite sex.

Despite what an increasingly ignorant society contends, those who suffer from this disorder are not actually, objectively the sex that they wish they were. Amputating healthy parts of their sexual anatomy, taking hormones, and cross-dressing does nothing other than create a perverse illusion that they are the sex they wish they were.

Amputations, hormones, and cross-dressing are not the proper ways to treat this disorder. Those who suffer from GID deserve compassion and treatment — not affirmation, confirmation, celebration, or accommodation.

Three years ago I wrote that much of the discussion about Gender Identity Disorder borders on the ridiculous:

Bad News for the “homosexual rights” movement — Gender Identity Disorder

Mental illness is a serious subject – and Gender Identity Disorder adds complexity by involving the intersection of opinion, science, psychology, health, nature and morality.

One definition of this psychological disorder reads:

“A person with a gender identity disorder is a person who strongly identifies with the other sex. The individual may identify with the opposite sex to the point of believing that he/she is, in fact, a member of the other sex who is trapped in the wrong body.”

The goal of the “Left Elite,” as author and activist Tammy Bruce wrote, is to create a world where there is: “No judgment, no conclusions, no reality, no rules, no personal responsibility. No guilt or innocence.” She could’ve added “and no mental illnesses.”

Bruce writes that the “Left Elite” also sees “all behaviors as morally relative and beyond judgment.” To push that agenda on a society with a rich Judeo-Christian heritage is a big job. There has to be an all out effort to “literally change what things mean.”

The definition of Gender Identity Disorder sounds very much like the definition of transgendered: “appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member the opposite sex.”

This is where we get close to parody. There is a movement to take this malady off the list of mental disorders as well. Proponents believe it’s perfectly healthy not only to believe you’re the opposite gender, but also to undergo reconstructive surgery.

It’s time for our Republican leaders to actually lead on the social issues. Thus far they have failed miserably. Rank and file Republicans must also send themselves to school so they can do their part helping to clear up the confusion that’s all too common.

Those who question why I often deal harshly with our Republican leaders might want to spend some time looking through the Obama Administration’s agenda. We wouldn’t be where we’re at today if it were not for the Republican Party’s failures here in Illinois.

It’s time for a professionalized and serious Party organization to be built.
