You can’t separate economics from morality (Part 2)

Arthur C. Brooks’ new book “The Battle” divides the two main aspects of the “culture war” into new and old, the economic and the social. Brooks seems to prefer that the culture war concentrate on economics and ignore the “old” battle over abortion and so-called homosexual rights.

You can’t separate economics from morality (Part 1)

I recently read through Arthur C. Brooks’ new book “The Battle: How the Fight between Free Enterprise and Big Government will shape America’s Future”; I mostly agree with the fine reviews it’s getting. Unfortunately Mr. Brooks reveals some confusion in the opening sentences when he acts as if the economic debate between socialism and capitalism is a new facet of the culture war…

So, Tea Partiers, shouldn’t we be in better shape after all these years?

Yesterday this column began looking at a 1990 speech given by the late Warren T. Brookes titled “Public Education and the Global Failure of Socialism.” For twenty years those on our side of the political aisle have known – or should have known – exactly what is wrong and how it needs to be righted. Instead, we have big government, big debt, big problems, a public education system that is failing, creeping socialism – and Obama.

Concerns from a new Illinois Republican Precinct Committeeman (Part 3)

Continuing with the discussion, let me report to you what often happens on the inside of many of these political planning meetings in campaigns, party, or independent organizations: To varying degrees, committees meet, plans are drafted, events are held, and when it’s all over, still not enough voters have been impacted.

Local GOP orgs could help stop government controlled health care

We’re at flood tide when it comes to the amount of fantastic materials available to anyone who wants to understand the health care reform debate. Truly it is a thing of beauty to watch countless issue advocacy organizations sending out top shelf analysis.

If you want it in brief, you can find it summed up in dozens of places. If you want to delve deeper, there are books and white papers and detailed plans with explanations of why the Democrats’ path to health care reform is exactly the wrong path to follow.

GOP 101: Tapping into “that something different” in the American fabric

Here’s an excerpt from a note I received just yesterday:

“Most of us cannot stomach politics. We’re watching what appears to be the rapid disembowelment of our country – and it’s not easy to stay ‘checked in’ to it all. I’m not surprised that others are staying checked out. Not that I don’t care anymore but it’s all just too horrible to watch without a game plan of some sort. People are busy with their lives but need to get involved. But what’s the plan?

Wimpy conservatives need to toughen up for the fight

I wish I didn’t have to report the following but I have to. Evidence for what works best in public policy doesn’t necessarily carry the day. Our political opponents are very committed to the delusion that socialism and the advancement of radical left-wing social policy will bring a better life for all.

If we had a GOP, we wouldn’t have a President BHO

Every so often, the newly sworn in President Barack Obama said back on January 20th, the oath of office “is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.” Setting aside Obama’s attempt to improve on the famous “dark and stormy night” line by fiction writer Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, the first six weeks of Obama’s presidency has ushered in just the kind of change people weren’t exactly hoping for.

GOP 101: Defending and promoting the party platform

Those of us at Champion News happily subscribe to the goal that the Republican Party should indeed be a “big tent.” Of course we define the term properly, whereas others completely misunderstand the meaning of the phrase as well as the purpose of a political party.

The goal for the Grand Old Party should be to attract conservatives of all stripes, plus moderates, and even wavering liberals who will support as many of the party’s planks as possible. If the goal is reached, so many people would join that a large tent would be required.

Political power: Use it or lose it

Policy matters. Principle matters. Professionalism matters. If, for example, Republicans hold power, spend like Democrats, fail to advance reforms – it’s not surprising that they’d get thrown out of power. Then in an ironic twist of fate, we’re about to get even more doomed-to-fail programs and policies from Democrats.

Local control and the problem of democratic delegation

At its core, the discussion of the “local control of the public schools” is about what is supposed to be the healthy operation of the democratic process. Unfortunately, the process is far from healthy. What, after all, does it mean to be local and who has the controls?

If federal and state union bureaucrats, for example, exert their powers during local teacher contract negotiations and the locally elected school board members are over-whelmed and concede to their demands, is that really local control at work?
